Freddy Adu leaves Finnish club to 'pursue other opportunities'
Freddy Adu's winding career path will take yet another turn.
The American midfielder announced on Tuesday that he had exercised an option in his contract with Finnish club Kuopion Palloseura (KuPS) to leave the club effective immediately to “pursue other opportunities.”
“I have decided to exercise my option in my contract to leave kups this summer to pursue other opportunities,” Adu wrote in a message on Twitter. “I thank the club and my teammates for welcoming me and making me a part of the team and I wish the team good luck for the remainder of the season and in the future.”
Adu had only just joined the Scandinavian top-flight club three months ago, signing a one-year contract. He started his first four games (three in the league and one in the club), then made only two further appearances, both as a substitute in league games. Adu either failed to get off the bench or did not make the match day squad in all of KuPS's last seven games. He never registered a goal or assist with the first team.

Adu did see time with the KuPS reserves, which play in the Finnish 4th division. While with the reserves, he scored one goal off a free kick.

After joining D.C. United at the age of 14 in 2004 as one of the most-hyped young players in the history of American soccer, Adu made the move abroad to Portuguese powerhouse Benfica in 2007 but has struggled to hold down a place abroad since then, plying his trade for clubs in France, Turkey, Greece, Brazil and Serbia before his move to Finland. Now Adu will look to catch on with his 12th club in an 11-year career.
