World Cup champion U.S. women schedule friendlies against Australia

The Women's World Cup champion U.S. women's national team announced Tuesday it will play a pair of September friendlies against Australia in Detroit and Birmingham.
The games are part of a 10-match tour in celebration of the team's third World Cup title. The U.S. women will face Australia on Sept. 17 at Detroit's Ford Field, and again Sept. 20 at Legion Field in Birmingham.
Australia was a 2015 World Cup quarterfinalist, topping Brazil in the round of 16 before being eliminated by Japan in a 1-0 loss. The two teams met in the opening game of Group D play, with the United States winning the match 3-1 behind two goals from Megan Rapinoe and a game-winner by Christen Press.
