Podcast: MLS All-Star format; USA-Mexico Gold Cup coaching fallout
MLS topped Tottenham in the league's All-Star Game 2-1 Wednesday night, but after some players, coaches and the league publicly wondered if it was time for a format change, we do too to kick off the newest Planet Fútbol Podcast.
After a heated debate between SI's Grant Wahl, Avi Creditor and a fired-up Brian Straus, we turn our attention to the coaching situations of Mexico and the USA, where Miguel Herrera is out, but Jurgen Klinsmann carries on.
After Mexico won the Gold Cup, CONCACAF got its wish and will host a USA-Mexico clash with high stakes, as the winner of the October 9 match will take the region's berth in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. Yet Mexico will have a new coach on the sideline after Herrera's ouster. Who might take over El Tri, and is there enough time to rally the side together ahead of the rumble at the Rose Bowl? And what about Klinsmann, who will be under pressure to deliver after the USA fell short in the Gold Cup, but seems to be secure in his job regardless?
We conclude by dishing on two of our recent projects: Interviewing Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the lengthy oral history of MLS's inaugural season. Between whisking Ibrahimovic through the Time & Life Building security to sharing some of the MLS 1996 memories that didn't make the final cut, there are plenty of hilarious stories to be shared.
