After a three-month break, the English Premier League finally returns on Saturday, Aug. 8.
In preparation for the new campaign, clubs are finishing up preseason friendlies this weekend, and these matches, typically against lower-level opponents, are a great way for managers to tinker with formations and players to impress their bosses. For new players, these contests are the all more important.
Liverpool's Christian Benteke, who the Merseyside giants signed for £32.5 million in July, wasted no time in opening his account with his new club.
In the 47th minute of a 2–1 Reds win over Swindon Town of Football League One, Benteke took a pass off his chest, turned and fired a right-footed volley from 20 yards out past a helpless Swindon Town goalkeeper. Jonathan Obika leveled the match in the 62nd minute before a Sheyi Ojo strike in the 87th minute lifted LFC to the win.
Liverpool opens its 2015–16 season on Sunday, Aug. 9 at 11 a.m. ET at Stoke City.
