Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere out several weeks with left leg fracture
Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has a fracture in his left fibula and will be out for several weeks, the team announced Thursday.
Wilshere, who also plays on the England national team, was injured during an accidental collision in training last week, a day before Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Chelsea in the Community Shield.
The team said Wilshere has a hairline crack in the leg and will continue to receive treatment from Arsenal’s medical team.
“I had a bad surprise because it is a hairline crack in his fibula that makes him a few weeks out,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. “There is minimal damage apart from the bone damage—there is no damage at all apart from that. It was a collision in training and it was all completely accidental.”

Wilshere, 23, has had an injury-plagued career, having had surgery on both ankles and having missing five months of last season following a left ankle injury, sustained during a match against Manchester United in November.
He came back for Arsenal’s final six games, including the FA Cup final victory against Aston Villa. Wilshere made 14 Premier League appearances in 2014-15, scoring two goals.
Arsenal finished third in the Premier League last season, 12 points behind champion Chelsea. Arsenal opens their EPL season on Aug. 9 against West Ham United.
His availability for England’s next two qualifiers for the 2016 UEFA European Championship is also in jeopardy. England takes on San Marino on Sept. 5 and Switzerland on Sept. 8.
