Stoke City has signed winger Xherdan Shaqiri from Inter Milan for a team record £12 million ($18.7 million) fee, the club announced on Tuesday.

Shaqiri signed a five-year contract with Stoke City.

The 23-year-old joined Inter Milan this year, signing a four-and-a-half year contract in January. He started his career with Swiss team FC Basel before playing for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. Shaqiri has also been a member of the Switzerland national team since 2010.

“It’s no secret that we have been pursuing Xherdan for some time now and we are delighted to have finally secured his signature,” said Stoke City chief executive Tony Scholes. “He’s an exciting young player who is really looking forward to playing in the Premier League having played at the very highest level in Germany with Bayern Munich and in Italy with Inter.”

In 2014–15, Shaqiri recorded eight goals and four assists across all competition, including three goals for Switzerland in the World Cup. He joins the likes of Ibrahim Afellay amid a makeover at the club.

Stoke City opened the Premier League season with a 1-0 loss to Liverpool. It plays Tottenham on Saturday.
