U.S. Under-23 and Under-20 men's national team forward Lynden Gooch made his first-team debut for Sunderland Tuesday, coming on as a 58th-minute substitute in the club's League Cup match vs. Exeter City. Sunderland won the second-round battle 6-3 on the strength of a hat trick from Jermain Defoe and two goals from Jack Rodwell.

Gooch, 19, has been in top form for Sunderland's U-21 side after being left off of Tab Ramos's roster for this summer's FIFA U-20 World Cup, scoring in each of the U-21s' three matches this month.

Gooch could be in the mix for the USA's Olympic qualifying team. The U.S. U-23s will be facing England and Qatar next month in a pair of friendlies in the UK. England named its roster for the match on Tuesday, with the likes of Liverpool's Jordon Ibe suiting up against manager Andreas Herzog's side.

The U-23s will face Canada, Panama and Cuba in CONCACAF Olympic qualifying in October in an attempt to reach the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
