Watch U.S. international Fabian Johnson score in the Champions League vs. Juventus

Fabian Johnson might be in Jurgen Klinsmann's doghouse, but he's doing just fine at Borussia Monchengladbach.

Johnson scored in Borussia Monchengladbach's Champions League match vs. Juventus on Tuesday, becoming the first U.S. international to score in the competition in two years (Sacha Kljestan, Anderlecht). Johnson's dismissal from U.S. men's national team camp following the CONCACAF Cup loss to Mexico put him squarely in the crosshairs, with Klinsmann publicly questioning his commitment to the team after he asked to be subbed out of the Confederations Cup playoff in extra time despite not being injured.

His response on the club level has been strong, though, and he added to it with the first Champions League goal of his career. In an advanced position, Johnson received the ball following a failed clearance, and he made Juventus pay with a clinical right-footed finish to put Monchengladbach ahead 1-0 in the 18th minute (Juventus wound up equalizing on a great goal of its own and forcing a 1-1 draw):

The U.S. roster for the beginning of 2018 World Cup qualifying will be released on Sunday, and it's unclear as to whether Klinsmann and Johnson have patched up their differences to the point that the only U.S. player in the Champions League will be welcomed back into the fray.
