Watch: Rooney ends Manchester United's 404-minute goal drought

Watch Wayne Rooney end Manchester United's goal drought at 404 minutes in the Champions League.

With Manchester United's goal drought extending beyond the 400-minute mark, under-fire captain Wayne Rooney stepped up and relieved a whole lot of tension at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Rooney's 79th-minute header snapped a 0-0 deadlock between Manchester United and CSKA Moscow, breaking the Red Devils' streak of futility at 404 minutes and (coupled with PSV's win over Wolfsburg) putting United in first place in the Champions League's Group B through four games with a 1-0 win. United hadn't scored since Anthony Martial did in the 65th minute of its last match against CSKA Moscow, which came on Oct. 21.

Jesse Lingard's cross after Michael Carrick's long ball picked him out on the right side of the box set up an unmarked Rooney for the successful header at the doorstep. It (along with Chris Smalling's sliding goal-line save) ensured United did not play a fourth straight 0-0 draw and likely prevents Louis van Gaal from fielding more questions about Rooney's inability to score, something he grew publicly irritated about last week.
