MLS owners support expansion to 28 clubs, proposed Miami stadium
MLS announced plans for the league’s potential expansion to 28 clubs on Saturday.
The league currently includes 20 teams, split into two conferences. MLS announced support from owners for its expansion plan, which currently includes growth to 24 teams by 2020. Atlanta, Los Angeles and Minnesota will add teams in the next three years,
A group led by David Beckham vying to make Miami the league’s 24th franchise received support from league owners for its most recent stadium location proposal on Saturday. MLS “has engaged in discussions with multiple markets and potential owners” about expanding further, but the timeline beyond 2020 remains unclear.
“There is no shortage of demand for MLS expansion teams, and we believe the opportunity exists to grow beyond our current plans,” MLS commissioner Don Garber said in a statement. “During the next few months, we will evaluate the possibility of growing the league to 28 teams and establish a process and timeline should we decide on further expansion.”
