Sunday’s Bundesliga match between Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund was delayed for about 15 minutes in bizarre circumstances in the second half after the referees walked off the field.

The incident occurred after Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt was given a red card for protesting a Dortmund goal. After Dortmund was awarded a free kick in its defensive half, the team executed a quick counter attack that ended with a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang goal in the 64th minute.

Schmidt appeared to be angry that the free kick was not taken from where the foul occurred and refused to leave the field after receiving the card.

Referee Felix Zwayer sent Leverkusen striker Stefan Kießling to talk to Schmidt, but then decided to leave the field along with his assistants when that failed to produce the desired result.

Eventually, the players were also directed back into the locker rooms, but they and the refereeing crew returned to complete the rest of the match after Schmidt agreed to leave the bench.

Here's the play that started the incident.

Aumbameyang's goal would end up being the decider, as Dortmund won the match 1–0.
