Juventus wins fifth straight Serie A championship
For a fifth straight season, Juventus is the king of Serie A.
Roma's 1-0 win over Napoli on Monday secured another Scudetto for Juventus, which leads Napoli by 12 points with three games remaining in the season. Juventus went to the cusp of the championship on Sunday with a 2-1 win at Fiorentina, and the Bianconeri finished off the job Monday with help from Roma. Radja Nainggolan's 89th-minute winner secured the 32nd official title for Juventus (two other titles were stripped during the Calciopoli match-fixing scandal), the most in Serie A history.
The five straight titles also mark a first for Juventus, which watched the decisive match and celebrated accordingly:
Juventus's season did not start out looking as promising as the previous four. After finishing as Champions League runner-up to Barcelona, Juve underwent massive personnel changes and lost three of its first six matches. The club only lost one time after that in league play, though, that coming on October 28 to Sassuolo. Since then, the club ripped off an unbeaten 25-game run (24-0-1) to catapult up the standings and raise the trophy once again.
Argentina striker Paulo Dybala spearheaded the attack with 16 goals, while Paul Pogba marshaled the midfield and Gianluigi Buffon was his masterful self in goal. Juventus has conceded a league-low 18 times in 35 games and can used the the final three matches to celebrate and prepare for next month's Coppa Italia final against AC Milan, where Juve will go for the double.
