Watch: Portugal's Quaresma scores late into extra time vs. Croatia
Portugal and Croatia did not play the most riveting game of Euro 2016, not even remotely close to it, but a late flurry of action has Cristiano Ronaldo & Co. onto the quarterfinals after a 1-0 win in extra time.
Ricardo Quaresma scored in the 117th minute on Portugal's first shot of the game, following up a rebound of a saved Ronaldo shot on a long-awaited counterattack to put Portugal through. Moments earlier, Ivan Perisic had a chance on Croatia's first shot of the game, but it was expertly saved by Rui Patricio.
Portugal will play against Poland in the final eight for a place in the semifinals.
In a drab first 45 minutes, Pepe had the best chance. Raphael Guerreiro's service off a free kick found the Real Madrid center back in a perfect spot in the box, but he put his header over the bar.
Domagoj Vida missed a header of his own around the hour mark, with Darijo Srna putting a free kick on a platter for him only to have his glancing header go wide of the post.
The game remained without a shot on goal until the 116th minute, when action picked up furiously. Perisic put a chance to the bottom corner, only to have it kept out by Patricio.
On the ensuing counterattack, Nani found a wide-open Ronaldo on the right channel, and his shot was heroically saved by Danijel Subasic. The rebound was left on the doorstep for Quaresma, though, and he put Portugal in the lead with his header when it seemed that penalties were a foregone conclusion.
