Atletico Madrid rode a wonderful goal from Yannick Carrasco and a trademark stingy and organized defensive effort to a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich the Champions League on Wednedsay.

The two sides are among the favorites to make deep runs in the Champions League, and after both had chances go begging or get denied by on-point goalkeepers Jan Oblak and Manuel Neuer, Carrasco's special effort broke the deadlock in the Spanish capital and proved to be the game-winner.

Carrasco's low, left-footed shot from 20 yards out hit off the post and in, beating Neuer and giving last season's Champions League runner-up a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute. It came some 15 minutes after Fernando Torres blew a golden opportunity, putting a point-blank header off the post.

On the goal-scoring sequence, Carrasco had Torres open to his left on a breakaway, but he opted to take the more difficult chance himself, and he cashed in.

Watch the two opportunities below:

Atletico Madrid had a chance to make it 2-0, but Antoine Griezmann struck an 84th-minute penalty kick off the bar after Arturo Vidal recklessly clattered into Filipe Luis in the box. No matter, Atletico held on and has sole possession of first place in Group D.

The two sides are both expected to get out of Group D, with both winning their opening matches against PSV and FC Rostov. PSV and Rostov drew 2-2 on Wednesday.
