A little more than two years ago, Terrence Boyd was among the last cuts from the USA's World Cup roster and a budding forward in the player pool. A major knee injury and multiple complications later, it's surprising to him that he's even playing at all.

"It's just a miracle that I'm back on the pitch right now," Boyd said from Washington, D.C., where the U.S. men's national team will play New Zealand in the final friendly before the last round of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup commences next month.

The 25-year-old Boyd, who has yet to feature for RB Leipzig's first team this season but scored twice in a reserve match in Germany's fourth division a couple of weeks ago, may not see the field against the Kiwis. The fact that he's even in the picture at all, though, is a far cry from where he thought he'd be after an injury-plagued two years that made him contemplate stepping away from the game altogether.
