Bayern Munich's Javi Martinez has revealed that he has no preferred position ahead of the upcoming Bundesliga season.

The versatile Spaniard was utilised predominantly as a centre-back under coach Carlo Ancelotti last season, but is equally adept in midfield.

And asked where he expects to play next season, Martinez stressed that he is not concerned over which position he is asked to take up.

"It was the first question to me from Carlo when he arrived in Munich," the former Athletic Bilbao man said. "And I am going to answer the same.

"I really don't care, I just want to play. I just want to help my team. Wherever he wants me to play I will do and I don't have any preference.

"I feel comfortable in both positions. I have played the last three years in centre-back but I also played for ten years as a midfielder so I feel comfortable in both. I really don't care."

The 28-year-old was used in midfield by Ancelotti for Saturday's friendly against AC Milan, a game in which Bayern fell to a heavy 4-0 defeat.

Thiago's injury left a gap in midfield which was duly filled by Martinez. "At first I felt a bit lost because I have not played there for so long," he said after the game. "Sometimes Ancelotti needs me there and sometimes in defence."

Martinez made 37 appearances in all competitions for Bayern last season, regularly partnering Mats Hummels in defence.
