Chicago Red Stars to Play Bay FC in First NWSL Game at Wrigley Field

In June, while the Chicago Cubs are away, two NWSL teams will play.

The Chicago Red Stars will host Bay FC on June 8 at Wrigley Field, the team announced Tuesday morning. It will mark the first National Women's Soccer League game at one of American sports' most historic locations.

“Wrigley Field is one of the most iconic sports venues in the country. This is a unique opportunity for us to bring further visibility to our team and women’s soccer,” Red Stars captain and goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher said in a team statement. “Chicago has always been an incredible sports town with such a rich history; I can’t wait to compete on the field, under the lights, in front of our dedicated Chicago fans from every part of the city!”

Wrigley Field has not hosted soccer with regularity since the 1980s, when the North American Soccer League's Chicago Sting called the stadium home. The most recent soccer game of any kind there was a friendly between Roma and Poland's Zagłębie Lubin in 2012.

At 2-0-1, Chicago is currently second in the NWSL standings.
