Men's First Round Highlights

Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal beat Richard Gasquet 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 in his first match at a major tournament since he was upset in the fourth round of the French Open on May 31. With tendinitis in both his knees, Nadal's layoff led to his drop in the rankings from No. 1 to No. 3. Gasquet recently came off a 2 1/2-month suspension for testing positive for cocaine and appealed what would have been a longer ban, saying the drug entered his system when he kissed a woman at a nightclub.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

The No. 7 seed lost only three games in dispatching American wild card Chase Buchanan, 18, the youngest player in the field.

Andy Roddick

Roddick didn't begin his match until after 11 p.m. ET on opening day, but he was sharp from the start in a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 victory against Bjorn Phau. He finished with 13 aces and connected on 81 percent of his first serves.

Roger Federer

The five-time defending champion lost his serve twice but still eased past Devin Britton 6-1, 6-3, 7-5. Britton, 18, won the NCAA singles championship in May before leaving Ole Miss to turn pro.

John Isner

The 24-year-old American won a Grand Slam match for the first time in two years with a 6-1, 7-6 (14), 7-6 (5) victory against 28th-seeded Victor Hanescu. Isner won a 30-point tiebreaker in a second set that lasted 71 minutes.

Simon Greul

The 65th-ranked Greul pulled out a 6-3, 4-6, 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (9) victory against Giovanni Lapentti. The fifth set lasted 76 minutes. Greul's reward for advancing? A second-round date with Roger Federer.

Mikhail Youzhny

The Russian knocked out No. 26 Paul-Henri Mathieu 2-6, 7-5, 6-0, 6-2 as Mathieu became the first seeded player to fall.

Tommy Robredo

The No. 14 seed took out American qualifier Donald Young 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Robredo won 47-of-55 (85 percent) points on his first serve.

Nikolay Davydenko

The No. 8 seed, a two-time semifinalist here, opened his tournament with a straight-sets victory against Dieter Kindlmann.

James Blake

Blake celebrates his 6-1, 6-4, 7-5 victory over Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain.

Tommy Haas

The 20th-seeded Haas wasn't happy here, but he eliminated Alejandro Falla 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2.
