Roger Federer wriggled out of big trouble in the early rounds, but he couldn't summon another escape act against 12th-seeded Tomas Berdych. The hard-hitting Berdych downed the six-time champion 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 as Federer failed to advance to the Wimbledon final for the first time since 2002.

Andy Roddick was broken only once -- the last game of the match. That's all the 82nd-ranked Yen-Hsun Lu needed to pull off a 4-6, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 9-7 victory. Lu entered the tournament with a 6-18 record in majors.

Venus appeared to be on a Wimbledon final collision course with sister Serena, but No. 82 Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria spoiled those plans with a surprisingly routine 6-2, 6-3 victory. Williams, a five-time Wimbledon champion, sprayed 29 unforced errors compared to six for her unheralded opponent.
