U.S. Open Day 8 matches to watch

• Jo Wilfried Tsonga vs. Mardy Fish (third match, Ashe): This was the match that popped out when the draw was released, and it has great potential to be the epic five-setter that this tournament desperately needs. Both men have cruised through the early rounds. This will be their first career meeting. Expect Tsonga to bring that high-flying athleticism and win over some of the crowd. He's just impossible to root against.

• Serena Williams vs. Ana Ivanovic (second match, Ashe): I just don't see any way around it: This is going to be a bloodbath. It would take a remarkable letdown from Williams for Ivanovic to have a chance here. So, if you like watching someone get blasted off the court and possibly break out in tears, this is your match.

• Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova vs. Francesca Schiavone (first match, Ashe): This matchup between the youngest and oldest players left in the draw is a rematch of their quarterfinal at the French Open, where Schiavone, the Queen of Comebacks, rallied from a 6-1, 4-1 deficit to knock out the Russian. Pavlyuchenkova, 20, can control a match with her power game, but Schiavone always finds creative ways to win, using her spin to open up the court and get to the net.  The big question mark? How are those 31-year-old legs doing, Fran? The No. 7 seed has had to grind out two three-setters already.

• Janko Tipsarevic vs. Juan Carlos Ferrero (first match, Armstrong): No blaming fitness in this one, as both players won shortened third-round matches after their opponents retired in the second set. If these two guys with evenly matched games aren't prepared to battle it out, I'll be very disappointed.

Caroline Wozniacki vs. Svetlana Kuznetsova (first night match, Ashe)
