• Some overnight results of note: Three-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist Kaia Kanepi upended Andrea Petkovic 6-1, 7-6 (7) in Brisbane, Australia; Francesca Schiavone will face Kanepi in the semifinals after beating Jelena Jankovic in another epic, with the Italian coming back from a set down and saving two match points in her 5-7, 7-6 (2), 6-3 victory; and Sabine Lisicki retired from her quarterfinal match against Angelique Kerber in Auckland, New Zealand, with an abdominal strain.

• The New York Timescatches up with Margaret Court in Perth, Australia, to discuss her recent comments condemning homosexuality and gay marriage. Court says she's surprised by the negative reaction to her remarks and that she does not hate gays. She just doesn't think they should have equal rights.

• According to Andy Murray, who has struggled in his two wins this week in Brisbane, he's too relaxed at the moment and it's hurting his game. "I haven't really been nervous," he told reporters. "Almost the other way. Sometimes when you go on the court and you're not a little bit nervous, sometimes you start slow. I've always been much better when I have been nervous. I feel like it gets you going.”

• Steve Tignor looks at the "uncannily normal and sane" Roger Federer. "You'd probably be happy and sane too if you were such an extraordinary athlete," Tignor writes. Fair point!

• A somewhat humorous news item: Caroline Wozniacki got a coaching violation at the Hopman Cup. The purported helper? Not her new coach, Ricardo Sanchez, but her father, Piotr. This is going to be an interesting arrangement.
