• Tennis Australia is taking a stand against Bernard Tomic. The Age reports that Tomic has been banned from Australia's first-round Davis Cup tie; the federation will cut his funding; and at the Newcombe Awards, a gala honoring the year's top performers, his name didn't come up once despite the fact that he was Australia's No. 1 for most of 2012 (Marinko Matosevic now holds that distinction, at No. 49, three spots ahead of Tomic). The question is whether these sort of hard-line tactics will work. Hanging the 20-year-old out to dry could end up galvanizing him in the wrong direction.

• Tomic responded to the report by insisting he was never meant to play the Davis Cup tie and that he had planned to use the time for training. In the same interview, he said he would be the best to play the game. So who knows.
