MASON, Ohio -- There are two Fabio Fogninis. There's the clever player who made three consecutive ATP finals and won his first two career titles last month, climbing to a career-high No. 16. And then there's the flighty, checked-out player who made an appearance at the Western & Southern Open on Monday.

Fognini gave away his first-round match without making his opponent hit a single ball in the final game. The Italian essentially broke his own serve to hand Radek Stepanek a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Serving at 4-5 in the second set, Fognini began the game by hitting back-to-back double faults. Frustrated, he smashed the ball out of the court to earn a code violation for ball abuse. Because the outburst was his second code violation of the match, he was given a point penalty to fall behind 0-40.

After arguing with umpire Gerry Armstrong that he was unaware he had received the first code violation, Fognini stepped to the service line and ... stepped on it. He foot-faulted twice to lose the point. Game. Set. Match.

That's just Fabio being Fabio.
