• It took Andy Murray just 37 minutes to beat Mousa Zayed, a Qatari wildcard ranked No. 2129 in the world, 6-0, 6-0 in the first round of the Qatar Open. I'm all for giving wildcards to local players, but how did this help anyone?

• In her first WTA match, 16-year old Ana Konjuh knocked out No. 1 seeded Roberta Vinci 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at the ASB Classic in Auckland. The former junior champion is the real deal.

• 17-year-old Australian Ashleigh Barty scored a big win over Daniela Hantuchova in the first round of the Brisbane International, beating the veteran 6-3, 7-5. She would have faced Maria Sharapova in the second round, but unfortunately she had to withdraw from the tournament, as well as next week's tournament in Hobart, with a torn adductor. However, unlike the families of most up-and-coming tennis stars, Barty's family somehow remains non-overbearing.

• Another young Aussie talent is also racing to get fit for the Australian Open: Nick Kyrgios pulled out of Brisbane with a shoulder injury.

• Sam Stosur is 0-2 at Hopman Cup, with losses to Eugenie Bouchard and Flavia Pennetta. But she says she's not panicking (yet).

• Grigor Dimitrov does his best Baywatch impression.

• Sam Querrey does a Q&A with the ATP.

• Liezel Huber isn't retiring after all. She'll try to play a through a full season in 2014.
