MELBOURNE, Australia -- After two matches lasting more than three hours in the scorching Australian heat, Jerzy Janowicz finally ran out of gas in the third round. He lost to Florian Mayer 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 on Friday. After the match, Janowicz revealed he'd been managing an injury -- doctors in Poland advised him not to compete at the tournament due to a broken bone in his foot, which was diagnosed during the offseason.

"Before I [left] Poland, [it] was still a little bit broken; was not 100 percent healthy," he tearfully told reporters after the loss. "There was still quite a bit inflammation. So all the time I'm taking inflammation pills, and we will see how it's going to be. Anyway it's better than it was before definitely."

The injury interrupted his preseason training and forced him to withdraw from the Hopman Cup. He went into last week's Sydney International, his first tournament of the year, with little practice and he lost in his opening match. Janowicz clawed through the first two rounds at the Australian Open, but his lack of preparation finally caught up to him.

"I was completely kaput," Janowicz said.

Janowicz had hoped for a night match in cooler conditions in the third round, but that didn't happen. He couldn't keep up with Mayer's unorthodox game, built on spins, variety and angles.

"I'm anyway really happy, because I didn't expect I'm going to be third round without practicing," Janowicz said.
