MELBOURNE, Australia -- Ana Ivanovic knocked out five-time champion and No. 1 Serena Williams 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the fourth round of the Australian Open on Sunday.

Ivanovic made the quarterfinals here for the first time since reaching the final in 2008, the year she won the French Open and climbed to No. 1. The 26-year-old will face No. 30 Eugenie Bouchard next.

Williams, who struggled with a back injury she picked up between her second and third rounds, was unable to play her best tennis. But Ivanovic took charge of the match behind some big hitting on her forehand and efficient serving.

"I just stayed in the moment physically," said Ivanovic, who beat Williams for the first time in five matches. "I didn't think much about the occasion and who I was playing, because it can get overwhelming."

• Ivanovic on her belief: "Just to stay and believe in my game and what I worked on. Because I'm the kind of player that I like to control the points and I like to also be aggressive and I just have to believe in it."

• Ivanovic on making her first Australian Open quarterfinal since 2008: "I had to remind myself all the time just to stay in the moment. Because there were moments in the match where it could have gone either way. I could have just made a few more errors. But I really just believed in my game and stepped up when I needed to. I had to break a spell, fourth round, and what's the better place to do it than here against such a champion?"

• Ivanovic on playing with nothing to lose: "I had very tough fourth-round matches in a Grand Slam, and this was probably the tough of toughest. I just went out there to play. I had nothing to lose, as well. I just kept swinging. Even when I made errors I really believed in it. So to have that victory, it's amazing. We all know what kind of champion she is."

• Ivanovic on the mental component of the win: "Last year I had few occasions when I was really close beating top players and I didn't quite do it. And now I just believed and I didn't even think about that. I just tried to step up and play my game, be aggressive. Even if you make a mistake it was in your hands, and you can sleep sound at night."

• Williams' assessment of her form: "I made a tremendous amount of errors, shots I missed I normally don't miss; I haven't missed since the '80s. I'm just not used to missing those shots. She made some good shots, and I just made way, way, a lot of unforced errors."

• Williams on bouncing back: "I always feel like I can do better and how I can improve. As I fell at Wimbledon, I was able to get myself back up. Like I said, sometimes it's good when I lose because it takes my head out of the clouds. Not that they are ever there, so to speak. I just work as if I'm ranked 1,000 in the world."

• Williams on her back injury and almost withdrawing before her third-round match: "Well, yeah, I almost pulled out. I'm such a competitor. I mean, I probably should have. Like I said, again, I don't want to blame anything. I feel like Ana deserves all the credit. I feel she played unbelievable today.  I think she went for her shots."

• Williams on the calendar Grand Slam, which her coach said before the tournament she could accomplish this year: "I have given up on that a long time ago. I feel like I don't even think about winning four in a row. Maybe I can win four in a row, but it seems like in the one year it's kind of difficult for me for whatever reason."
