INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- The last time we saw Tim Smyczek in a big tournament, he achieved his career-best showing at a Grand Slam tournament by advancing to the third round of the U.S. Open and becoming the last American in the men's draw. He entered the BNP Paribas Open with a 1-5 ATP Tour record this season, but that doesn't mean he isn't capable of some great tennis.

Smyczek went on to beat Sock 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 in an all-American first-round match. The 26-year-old from Wisconsin will play Alexandr Dolgopolov in the second round.
