Roger Federer wins doubles and goes on a selfie spree

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- Friday was busy for Roger Federer at the BNP Paribas Open.

He and doubles partner Stanislas Wawrinka helped pack the new 8,000-seat Stadium 2 for their opening match. The two Swiss stars defeated No. 6 Rohan Bopanna and Aisam Qureshi 6-2, 6-7 (4), 10-6 before going through another round of media interviews.

So to keep himself entertained, Federer decided to go on a selfie spree after the match, which included a well-placed surreptitious snap in the middle of their news conference:

Opportunities to see Federer on the doubles court aren't common these days. He and Wawrinka won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics, but their focus on singles and the concerns over Federer's health have limited their doubles pairings over the years. But with Federer healthy again, and a potential run at Davis Cup looming, they were happy to take advantage of the spread-out schedule in Indian Wells to pair up.

"Let's not forget sort of once the season gets underway it all becomes very intense and more complicated playing doubles in the clay season all the way through the grass season," Federer said after the match (when he wasn't secretly snapping photos). "So usually maybe I play in Halle, if that, and usually play here and maybe down the stretch a couple more times. But it depends how it will go and how we both feel for the year. Clearly we will always stay in touch and see if we could or should do maybe a bit more."

Federer puzzled by lack of teen success on tour

Keep the popcorn warm for "Federinka's" second-round match. They will play either Novak Djokovic and Filip Krajinovic or Ernests Gulbis and Milos Raonic.
