INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- One key to Grigor Dimitrov's surge up the rankings over the last six months has been his improved discipline and intelligence on the court. He's not going for the tongue-wagging shot every time. Instead, he's embracing the groundbreaking idea that sometimes it's OK to just win a point in a thoroughly boring way.

But you can't take the showtime out of the guy completely.

In the final game of his 6-4, 6-3 victory over Robin Haase in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open on Sunday, Dimitrov played some scrambling defense before finishing with a sliding backhand volley passing shot. Spoiler alert: He liked it.

No. 16 Dimitrov plays No. 22 Ernests Gulbis in the third round on Tuesday. It's the third meeting between the two in a month. Gulbis won 6-4, 7-6 (3) at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, and Dimitrov won 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-5 at the Mexican Open.
