Eugenie Bouchard: "I don't think the tennis tour is the place to have friends"

PARIS -- Eugenie Bouchard is making another deep run at a Grand Slam tournament.

Bouchard, who reached the Australian Open semifinals in January, defeated No. 9 Angelique Kerber 6-1, 6-2 on Sunday to advance to the quarterfinals of the French Open. The 20-year-old Canadian extended her winning streak to nine -- she claimed her first WTA title last week, in Nuremberg, Germany -- and recorded her first win against a top-10 player at a major.

If there was ever any doubt about Bouchard's competitive prowess, she put it to rest after the match. When asked about her closest friends on the WTA Tour, the Montreal native went full-on reality-show contestant.

"Best friend on tour, I don't have one," Bouchard said. "I don't think the tennis tour is the place to have friends. For me, it's all competition. And I think it's important to just remember that we're going to play against each other. It's not like we're teammates. To me, it's kind of more competitive."
