• Tom Perrotta for the Wall Street Journal says that despite the promise, both men's quarterfinals matches on Wednesday ultimately fell flat.

The prospects were good! [David] Ferrer had beaten [Rafael] Nadal on clay this spring and had been superb so far while Nadal had struggled with his sore back, backhand and serve. [Gael] Monfils -- sometimes amazing, sometimes terrible, sometimes indifferent -- takes on magical qualities in Paris, where showmanship is appreciated like nowhere else in the sport.

Nadal got off to a bad start -- "my backhand was appalling," he said in Spanish -- and Ferrer won the first set, 6-4. [Andy] Murray and Monfils played some fun points and Murray won their first set, also 6-4. Monfils took a brief vacation and presto: 6-1 for Murray in the second set. Nadal played a bit better, Ferrer a bit worse: 6-4 for Nadal in the second set.

And then everything went wrong. Ferrer -- a man known for his tireless legs and spirit -- gave up. He didn't know why. And he felt embarrassed.
