The Daily Pain is your dose of the interesting reporting, writing and quipping from around the Internet during the French Open (otherwise known as the Daily Bagel).

• Video: Andy Roddick discusses how he isn't sure that he would want Ernests Gulbis and his polarizing personality to be No. 1on Fox Sports Live.

• Tom Perrotta for the Wall Street Journal says that despite the promise, both men's quarterfinals matches on Wednesday ultimately fell flat.

The prospects were good! [David] Ferrer had beaten [Rafael] Nadal on clay this spring and had been superb so far while Nadal had struggled with his sore back, backhand and serve. [Gael] Monfils -- sometimes amazing, sometimes terrible, sometimes indifferent -- takes on magical qualities in Paris, where showmanship is appreciated like nowhere else in the sport.

Nadal got off to a bad start -- "my backhand was appalling," he said in Spanish -- and Ferrer won the first set, 6-4. [Andy] Murray and Monfils played some fun points and Murray won their first set, also 6-4. Monfils took a brief vacation and presto: 6-1 for Murray in the second set. Nadal played a bit better, Ferrer a bit worse: 6-4 for Nadal in the second set.

And then everything went wrong. Ferrer -- a man known for his tireless legs and spirit -- gave up. He didn't know why. And he felt embarrassed.

• From For The Win, a seriously in-depth look at Nadal's 'mechanisms' (or absurd habits) when he's playing. It goes much further than the un-pickable wedgie and the perfectly-arranged water bottles.

• SI's Jon Wertheim catches up with Robin Soderling, who remains the only person to have beaten Rafael Nadal at the French Open. Will we see the Swede return to tennis?

• Everything's not all roses for Eugenie Bouchard, who was overheard arguing with her coach during practice on Wednesday.

• While the French Open women's semifinals are taking place, Serena Williams is doing this.

• John McEnroe says that he would like to coach, but nobody (Murray) has called yet.
