Defending champion and world No. 1 Serena Williams has withdrawn from next week's Swedish Open.

Last week, Williams retired from her second-round doubles match at Wimbledon with sister Venus under bizarre circumstances. Serena, 32, appeared dizzy and uncoordinated through the warm-up and then retired three games into the match after she served four consecutive double faults. Serena blamed the incident on a viral illness.

"I decided not to play in Bastad, because I am still not feeling 100%," Williams said in a statement. "I want to be in perfect condition to go back on court, but unfortunately it's not the case. I really hope to be able to get back to training from next week."

Williams' next scheduled tournament is the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, Calif., which begins July 28.
