South Carolina freshman quarterback Lorenzo Nunez will start against UCF on Saturday, Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier told reporters Tuesday.

“I think it’s the first true freshman quarterback I’ve ever started, but that’s just where we are right now,” Spurrier said to the media. “Lorenzo gives us a little spark maybe we need offensively.”

In Saturday's 52–20 loss to Georgia, Nunez was 4-for-5 with 18 yards behind starter Perry Orth. He led the Gamecocks in rushing with 76 yards on the day.

“I don’t know that we’re a one-quarterback team completely,” Spurrier said, “but if [Nunez] goes out there and plays well, we might be.”

South Carolina's offense struggled mightily against Georgia, converting just 33.3% of third downs. Orth, a former walk-on, finished 6-for-17 with 66 yards passing and an interception.

Nunez, a Georgia-native, was rated a four-star prospect and the No. 25 player in the state by Rivals.com while in high school.

The Gamecocks (1–2) will host the Knights (0–3) on Saturday at Noon ET on ESPNU.
