Former MLB outfielder and designated hitter Jose Canseco is undergoing surgery after accidentally shooting his left middle finger, his fiancée told the Los Angeles Times.

KLAS-TV Las Vegas first reported that there was an accidental shooting at Canseco's home and that the ex-player was injured.

Canseco's fiancée Leila Knight told the Times that Canseco was cleaning his handgun and there was still a round in the chamber because Canseco had recently visited the shooting range.

"I heard the gun go off and saw his middle finger hanging by a string," she said. "It will either have to be amputated or have full reconstruction surgery."

Knight also said doctors have told Canseco that he will never have full use of his hand again.

On Wednesday, Knight tweeted a photo of Canseco after the surgery:

Canseco retired from baseball in 2002 and made a brief comeback attempt in 2004. He played for eight different teams during his 17-year career, including nine years with the Oakland Athletics.

The 50-year-old had a lifetime .266 average and .515 slugging percentage and hit 462 home runs. In 2005, he admitted to using anabolic steroids in a tell-all book and he was later cited in the Mitchell Report, which was an investigation into the use of steroids and other performance enhancing drugs by MLB players.

Canseco was a six-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion. He won the AL MVP award in 1988.
