Padres trade Joaquin Benoit to Mariners for Enyel De Los Santos

The Padres have traded Joaquin Benoit to the Mariners for his 15th season in the Majors.

The San Diego Padres have traded reliever Joaquin Benoit to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for righthander Enyel De Los Santos and infielder Nelson Ward, the team announced Thursday.

Benoit, 38, is coming off a season in which he finished with a 2.34 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 67 relief appearances for San Diego. He will enter his 15th professional season in 2016. 

De Los Santos, who turns 20 on Dec. 25, recorded 71 strikeouts in 62 1/3 innings with the Everett Aquasox (Shortseason A) and Mariners’ Arizona Fall League Team.

Ward, 23, was selected out of Georgia in the 12th round of the 2014 MLB draft by the Mariners. He finished the year with a .278 batting average, 81 runs, 9 home runs, 13 triples, 55 RBIs and 13 stolen bases in 122 games between Clinton (Single A) and Bakersfield (High A).
