Former Michigan State hockey coach Ron Mason died on Monday. He was 76.

Mason was the winningest coach in NCAA history when he retired in 2002. He won 924 games in 36 seasons with Lake Superior State, Bowling Green and the Spartans. Mason won 635 of his games with Michigan State, taking the program to the NCAA tournament 19 times.

Under Mason, the Spartans won a national championship in 1986.

After his coaching career, Mason served as the Spartans’ athletic director from 2002 to ’07. He was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.

Mason is survived by his wife, two daughters and two grandsons.
