Former NBA MVP Steve Nash is nearing a deal to join the Golden State Warriors as a part-time player development consultant, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.

Stein reports that Nash has no plans to formally go into coaching after announcing his retirement in March. Nash ended his career after having just played 65 games for the Los Angeles Lakers in the final two years of his career following a broken leg that also caused nerve damage.

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, president Rick Welts and player development coach Bruce Fraser previously worked with Nash as a member of the Phoenix Sunsorganization, where the point guard won two NBA MVP awards.

Nash has served as the Canadian national basketball team's general manager since 2012. Canada failed to qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro after a last-second loss to Venezuela in the FIBA America semifinal.
