Former New York Jets coach Rex Ryan will interview for the San Francisco 49ers' head coaching position Sunday, according to an NFL Network report.

The report was confirmed by the New York Daily News, and puts a timetable on the interview, which was first reported Tuesday night.

The 49ers have been without a head coach since Sunday, when the team and head coach Jim Harbaugh mutually agreed to part ways. On Monday, SI.com confirmed Harbaugh had accepted the head coaching position at the University of Michigan, which fired its head coach Brady Hoke on Dec. 2.

Ryan is free to pursue other coaching vacancies after the Jets fired him as well as general manager John Idzik earlier this week. Ryan coached the Jets for six seasons, and brought his team to the AFC championship game in each of his first two seasons. The Jets were 4-12 in 2014, and failed to make the playoffs for the fourth straight season.

Ryan reportedly knew since last offseason that the Jets were planning on firing him.

Ryan had been linked earlier this week to the Miami Dolphins' vacant defensive coordinator position, but reports of the Dolphins' interest in Ryan as well as a contract offer were later proven unfounded.

San Francisco has already interviewed several candidates for the head coaching position, including 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase
