Report: Jets to exercise fifth-year option on pass rusher Quinton Coples
The New York Jets will exercise the fifth-year option on pass rusher Quinton Coples's contract, reports Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.
Coples, 24, has played three seasons with the Jets since being selected in the first round of the 2012 draft out of North Carolina.
He has started 30 games—including 15 last season—recorded 16.5 sacks and 103 total tackles. Coples at times has struggled to defend the pass.
“You see potential,” New coach Todd Bowles said in March, according to Mehta. “He’s a lot like Geno (Smith). . . . You see him make plays and then you see him do other things at times. He can make strides this year and become a better player.”
The $7.8 million option is guaranteed only if Coples suffers an injury in 2015 that causes him to miss the 2016 season.
