Report: Saints RB C.J. Spiller (knee) won't play Week 1 vs. Cardinals

New Orleans Saints running back C.J. Spiller will not be ready to play in Week 1 after undergoing knee surgery on Aug. 14, reports NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

Spiller had arthroscopic surgery, considered a minor procedure, after his knee limited his ability to participate in the Saints’ preseason. He was originally expected to return by Week 1.

After taking an additional week to recover, Spiller should be ready for the Saints’ Week 2 contest against the Buccaneers, Rapoport reports.

The Saints signed Spiller to a four-year, $16 million contract in March, bringing the running back to New Orleans after he played the previous five seasons with the Bills.

Spiller was acquired to complement Saints four-year running back Mark Ingram, but for Week 1 Khiry Robinson, Marcus Murphy or Tim Hightower could be charged with filling that role.

The Saints will kick off their season against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. ET.
