Ben Affleck to Bill Simmons: Deflategate a Brady ‘smear campaign’
Actor Ben Affleck appeared on the first episode of Any Given Wednesday with Bill Simmons, where he delivered an impassioned rant on Deflategate.
In the interview, Affleck spoke for nearly five minutes about the Deflategate controversy, calling it a “conspiracy” and a “smear campaign” against quarterback Tom Brady.
Brady was suspended for the first four games of the 2015 season for his alleged role in a scheme to deflate footballs during the 2014 AFC Championship Game. His suspension was overturned on appeal but was reinstated in April. He is awaiting a decision on whether his second appeal will be heard by the Second U.S. District Court of appeals.
Affleck, who grew up in Cambridge, Mass., defended Brady as a “gentleman” and said he didn’t deserve the four-game suspension he was handed by the NFL for his alleged role in the scheme.
“What they did was suspend Tom Brady for four days for not giving them his f------ cell phone,” he said. “I would never give an organization as leak-prone as the NFL my f------ cell phone, so you can just look through my emails and listen to my voicemails?”

If Brady’s suspension stands, quarterback Jimmy Garappolo will start in his place in New England’s season opener against the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 11.
