Former Premier League striker Dalian Atkinson was killed after being shot with a taser by police in the Telford, England, according to The Guardian.

The West Mercia Police Department released a statement saying that it was investigating the death of an unnamed man.

“Upon arrival, Taser was deployed and a 48-year-old man, who subsequently received medical attention, was pronounced dead at approximately 3 a.m,” the statement said via CNN.

According to police, officers were responding to a “report for the concern for the safety of an individual.”

Atkinson, 48, had a 16-year career that included stints at clubs throughout the world. He starred at Aston Villa from 1991 to '95, scoring 23 goals over that period.

He was also the first black player to play for La Liga club Real Sociedad.
