Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez will be out at least two weeks after fracturing his hand falling down the steps in his apartment Monday night, Bayer Leverkusen announced Tuesday.

Chicharito underwent surgery for the fractured metacarpal and will miss the club's season opener against Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday, according to the club.

The injury may only cost Chicharito one league game. After Leverkusen plays Monchengladbach, it pauses for the international break the following week before facing Hamburg at home on Sept. 10. The injury could force Chicharito to miss Mexico's final World Cup qualifying matches of the semifinal round against El Salvador (Sept. 2) and Honduras (Sept. 6), which are of little consequence to El Tri. Mexico has already clinched first place in its group and a place in the CONCACAF hexagonal.

Chicharito, who scored his first goal of the 2016-17 calendar in Leverkusen's 2-1 German Cup first-round win over the weekend, helped Leverkusen to a third-place finish in the Bundesliga last season. His 17 league goals led the team and were fourth most behind Robert Lewandowski (30), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (25) and Thomas Muller (20).
