Two Canadian Football League players were fined Tuesday for bigoted remarks made toward Michael Sam on social media, according to Pro Football Talk's Josh Alper.
Montreal Alouettes slotback Arland Bruce III posted a profane message to Instagram, in which he told Sam to "get on your knees and submit to God fully," among other things.
Defensive tackle Bryant Turner of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers said Sam's future team's locker room would "come with complimentary robes" in a tweet he later deleted.
Both players were fined an undisclosed sum by the CFL, which released a statement condemning the players' comments and supporting Sam.
"The comments made by these players are extremely disappointing and do not represent the CFL’s views or the views of the vast majority of our players,” CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon said. “The CFL is supportive of openly gay athletes in professional sports and we commend the courage shown by Michael Sam."The commissioner also said the league would soon be announcing a partnership with a gay rights group.
