Maria Sharapova (leg) withdraws from Fed Cup vs. Germany
WTA No. 2 Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from Russia’s Fed Cup semifinal match against Germany this weekend because of a leg injury, she announced on Tuesday.
Sharapova, 27, last played in the Miami Open on March 26. She was upset 7–6, 6–3 by No. 97 Daria Gavrilova in the second round of the tournament.
In a Facebook post, Sharapova said she only recently returned to the court and is gradually increasing her workload.
Sharapova won the Brisbane International and reached the final of the Australian Open in January. She lost in the semifinals of the Abierto Mexicano in February and in the fourth round of the Paribas Open in March before the early loss to Gavrilova.
The winner of this weekend’s matchup between Russia and Germany will face the winner of the semifinal between the Czech Republic and France.
