Second-seeded Angelique Kerber loses in first round of Madrid Open

MADRID (AP) Top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska and second-seeded Angelique Kerber were upset in the opening round of the Madrid Masters on Sunday.

Radwanska, who replaced Serena Williams as the highest-seeded player after the No. 1-ranked American fell ill on Friday, was beaten 4-6, 7-6 (3), 3-6 by Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia.

Radwanska hit five aces but also had six double faults, while clay-court specialist Cibulkova broke the second-ranked Polish player 11 times.

Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic defeated Australian Open champion Kerber 6-4, 6-2.
