New No. 5 Victoria Azarenka has withdrawn from the French Open because of a right foot injury.

The former No. 1's announcement comes as no surprise given that she hasn't played since limping through an opening-round loss to Lauren Davis at the BNP Paribas Open on March 7, her only match since the Australian Open. Azarenka, a French Open semifinalist last year, lost her No. 4 ranking to Simona Halep on Monday.

"Unfortunately I will not be able to compete in Roland Garros this year —one of the greatest tournaments in one of the greatest cities in the world," Azarenka wrote on Facebook. "I am working very hard on my recovery and hopefully I will be able to resume practice soon. Thanks to all of you for the support. ... I love you all."

Azarenka spoke with Carole Bouchard of L'Equipe about her injury:

The French Open begins on Sunday.
