New No. 5 Victoria Azarenka has withdrawn from the French Open because of a right foot injury.

The former No. 1's announcement comes as no surprise given that she hasn't played since limping through an opening-round loss to Lauren Davis at the BNP Paribas Open on March 7, her only match since the Australian Open. Azarenka, a French Open semifinalist last year, lost her No. 4 ranking to Simona Halep on Monday.

"Unfortunately I will not be able to compete in Roland Garros this year β€”one of the greatest tournaments in one of the greatest cities in the world," Azarenka wrote on Facebook. "I am working very hard on my recovery and hopefully I will be able to resume practice soon. Thanks to all of you for the support. ... I love you all."

Azarenka spoke with Carole Bouchard of L'Equipe about her injury:

The French Open begins on Sunday.
