The Houston Astros are clinging to a small lead atop the AL West, and they held off the Texas Rangers for the top spot by beating the San Francisco Giants in their series opener on Monday night.

AL MVP favorite Yordan Alvarez and Co. are now favored to win the second game of this series, as they’ll have former All-Star Hunter Brown (3.53 ERA) on the mound against Giants left-hander Carson Whisenhunt.

The 25-year-old Whisenhunt has started five games for the Giants this season, posting a shaky 7.25 ERA.

Meanwhile, Brown is working his way back into action after missing time this season due to a shoulder strain. The Astros are hoping that he can be the ace of this rotation in the playoffs, as long as they’re able to secure a spot.

Houston has a half-game lead over Texas for the division, and it would slot in as the No. 3 wild card if it were to lose (and Texas won) on Tuesday night.

Brown is making his 12th start of the 2026 season, and he currently ranks in the 92nd percentile in expected batting average against (.197).

The star right-hander has given up just 41 hits in 58.2 innings of work, allowing four or fewer hits in eight of his 11 outings. Now, he takes on a Giants offense that has slipped to 27th in the league in batting average over the last 30 days.

San Francisco is way out of the playoff race in the National League, and I don’t expect it to get much going against Brown, who has induced a lot of weak contact (92nd percentile in average exit velocity against) and forces a ton of ground balls (94th percentile in ground-ball percentage) this season.

The Giants are an extremely tough team to trust with Whisenhunt on the mound, as he’s given up four or more earned runs in three consecutive outings.

The lefty has seen his expected ERA jump to 6.72 this season, and he may struggle against a Houston lineup that is fourth in MLB in Weighted Runs Created Plus (wRC+).

Meanwhile, Brown has allowed three or fewer earned runs in nine of his 11 appearances in 2026. The Astros have also seen their bullpen improve in a big way after a poor start to the season.

Houston now has a 3.97 bullpen ERA, which is ahead of San Francisco (4.37).

The Giants sold at the deadline, and they’re at a massive disadvantage on the mound tonight. I think this is a great spot to bet on Houston, which is one game over .500 on the road in 2026.
