This game features two starters that were acquired at the trade deadline, as Robbie Ray (3.24 ERA) makes his second appearance as a Padre against Milwaukee’s Dustin May (4.30 ERA).

May has multiple starts against the Padres this season, and his last outing against them was a one-hit shutout. So, oddsmakers have the Brewers set as slight favorites on the road in this series finale.

Can they avoid a sweep on Wednesday afternoon?

Robbie Ray OVER 2.5 Walks Allowed (+107)

This season, Robbie Ray ranks in just the 15th percentile in walk percentage, allowing 62 free passes in just over 127 innings of work.

Ray allowed five walks in his Padres debut, and he’s given up at least three walks in 11 of his 23 outings this season. So, I think he’s a clear fade candidate against a Milwaukee offense that has the second-best walk rate in MLB.

Over the last 30 days, the Brewers have drawn more walks than any other team in MLB, and they’re second overall in walks drawn.

Ray has been great over his last 11 starts (2.08 ERA), but he’s still walked three or more batters five times during that stretch, including four games with four or more walks. This is a pretty intriguing prop to get at plus money on Aug. 12.

The Padres struggled against May in their last matchup with him, but the right-hander hasn’t exactly been lights out in 2026.

May ranks in the fifth percentile in hard-hit percentage, the 51st percentile in expected ERA and the 40th percentile in expected BAA. Ray hasn’t been any better, ranking in the 30th percentile in expected ERA and 46th percentile in expected BAA.

He was tagged for four runs in his first outing for San Diego, but it is worth noting that Ray has a 2.08 ERA in 11 starts since June 1.

The biggest difference for the Padres during their recent surge has been their offense. They are No. 1 in OPS over the last 30 days and No. 2 in runs scored, moving them all the way out of the bottom 10 teams in the league in Weighted Runs Created Plus (wRC+) after sitting in there for most of the season.

San Diego is 10 games over .500 at home, and it has won four games in a row to move into a tie for the final wild card spot in the National League.

This pitching matchup is pretty even, but it’s hard to look past how hot this San Diego offense has been.

I’ll take the Padres to pull off an upset on Wednesday afternoon.
