North Carolina vs. Pitt Prediction, Odds and Key Players to Watch for College Football Week 6

Can Pitt improve to 6-0 even though it lost its starting quarterback for the season?

The Pitt Panthers entered the top-25 after moving to 5-0 with a win over Virginia Tech in Week 5, but it came at a price.

Starting quarterback Mason Heintschel is now out for the season after suffering a torn ACL, a massive blow to a Pitt offense that is 48th in the country in adjusted EPA/Play and 52nd in EPA/Pass. In five games, Heintschel had thrown for 14 touchdowns and just one interception, so it won’t be easy to replace his production.

Pitt remains favored in Week 6 against the North Carolina Tar Heels, who are looking to snap a two-game skid.

Senior Holden Geriner is set to take over as the starter at quarterback for Pitt on Saturday, and the line for this game is a lot closer than it would be if Heintschel was under center.

UNC is a four-point underdog despite being just 2-2 in the 2026 season. The back-to-back losses for the Tar Heels came against formidable opponents in against Clemson and Notre Dame, and Bill Belichick’s team does rank 50th in the country in net adjusted EPA/Play.

Can it pull off an upset and knock Pitt out of the top-25 on Saturday?

Let’s take a look at the odds, a player to watch and my prediction for this ACC showdown.

North Carolina vs. Pitt Key Player to Watch

Holden Geriner, Quarterback, Pitt

This is a huge spot for Geriner to step into, and his play could determine whether or not the Panthers have a realistic shot of staying in the top-25 this season.

“You watch how he throws the ball, he throws a nice ball,” Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi said this week. “He's composed. He might not have played a whole lot of football, but he's been around a lot of ball. He's not a freshman, he's not as sophomore, he has been around a lot football, so I just think it's his composure. His ability to go in there in the big moments and make good decisions.”

Geriner has thrown for 219 yards and two scores across three games this season, but he’d only attempted 21 career passes in his first four collegiate seasons at Auburn and Texas State. So, while he’s been around the block, actual playing experience hasn’t really been there for the new Pitt QB.

That makes this offense a bit of a wild card in Week 6.

North Carolina vs. Pitt Prediction and Pick

I’m going to fade both offenses in this matchup and take the UNDER, especially now that Pitt is starting a backup at quarterback.

The Panthers are 10th in the country in defensive success rate this season – which is much better than UNC (No. 102), and they’ve allowed 14 or fewer points in four of their five games.

Multiple games for Pitt against Power Four teams have fallen short of this total, as it combined for 19 points against UCF and 40 against Syracuse in the first three weeks.

Meanwhile, UNC has cleared this total two times in four games, with the team landing on exactly 48 combined points in a loss to Clemson.

I don’t trust this UNC offense, which ranks 96th in the country in EPA/Pass and 89th in EPA/Rush. The Tar Heels are averaging 4.6 yards per carry, but quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. is completing just 57.5 percent of his throws in 2026.

Rather than bet on Pitt with a backup under center, I’ll bet on the Panthers’ defense keeping UNC in check on Saturday.

Pick: UNDER 47.5 (-118 at DraftKings)
